Music — old and new

Filed under: Random Thought — tim @ 7:26 pm

My older sister hung out with people older than her.  As a result, I listened to music from a group of people about 10 years older than me.  I distinctly remember Van Halen’s ”Unchained” playing on the Top 40 station in 1981 and me talking along with Diamond Dave, “One big break, coming up!”  I was 8 years old.  When I was 10 years old I saw The Wall for the first time.  The images and music moved me like nothing I had heard or seen before.   I remember trying to tell my friends (in 6th grade) about Pink Floyd and they laughed at me.  A few years later, one of them became the biggest Pink Floyd fan I know.  Ha!

Having a background in music from the ’60s and the ’70s throughout the ’80s, unfortunately, made me really dislike the ’80s glammy, pop metal.   When Poison, Bon Jovi, Warrant and all of those other bands were topping the charts, I dug deeper into the ’60s and ’70s.  The end result was a kid born in ‘73 with the musical interests of a kid born in ‘53.  And yes, I believe that the pinnacle and turning point for all rock-oriented music took place in 1967.

It wasn’t until Nirvana broke through and changed everything in rock that I finally started paying attention to new music.  I can’t tell you how much I looked forward to the day when I could turn on a pop radio station and hear music that I liked!  Nirvana, Soundgarden, STP, Alice in Chains, all of those guys just really did a number on music.  Good times, I must say.  From ‘91/’92 through ‘95/’96, there was a ton of GREAT new music released.  Even country music was good during that time.  Unfortunately, record companies have to sign any band that sounds like the popular band so the late ’90s turned to crap again.  Some gems made it through the muck and the mire, but overall it went downhill.  By 2000, popular radio was crap again.

From 2004 to present (2008), I think we’re seeing another set of good music break through the corporate mold.  Interestingly, I think that the Internet is making it difficult to get the music out.  Look at me–I write and record in my basement.  If it’s that easy, who isn’t recording?  I think there’s so much choice now and so many options for listening to music that the standard forms of playing music can’t keep up.  You have the corporate playlist stations and some true alternative stations playing the indie stuff, but they can’t keep up with it.  Nor can they survive by playing anything because, really, who wants to hear music they don’t like?  But how can you hear new music without listening through what you don’t like?

It will be interesting to see where music goes.  My guess is that within the next 10-20 years, music distribution will officially change.  Maybe no more FM stations transmitting music?  Maybe we’ll be able to program our own XM equiv. radio to play what we want to hear or to interface with something like last.fm to suggest a radio playlist based on our likes and dislikes.

Yeah, that seems reasonable.  I’m going with that one as my prediction for the future of music.  Unfortunately, or fortunately, more and more artists will be releasing more and more music and less and less will be heard by the masses.  Perhaps the days of arena rock and diamond selling albums are soon to be over?  Perhaps artists in the future will–gasp–write and record because they like to write and record?

Big News!

Filed under: Random Thought — tim @ 7:10 pm

I haven’t had a post for a while, as you can tell, but tonight I’m pleased to announce big news…

I am currently packing up my gear and leaving tomorrow morning to record some songs with a friend in Cincinnati. We have at least three songs that should be ready for “prime-time” by the end of next week. Hopefully we’ll at least get a few more songs started. We’re also setting up our systems to be mirrors of each other so that we can work on songs together over the Internet.

We’re hoping to have about 15 songs by the end of the year. I currently have about 15 ideas for songs and I know that he has a few cookin’ too. We’ve also discussed doing some covers but those may not see the light of day–too many legal issues with royalties, etc.

I’ll update this site when there is a new song available. I’ll be uploading it to last.fm (where a few of my other songs are currently sitting).

Stay tuned!

Two in one day!

Filed under: Random Playing — tim @ 11:43 pm

This post has no purpose but to let you listen to me playing around.  I’m entirely re-recording an old song with my wah and wanted to work out the settings.  I found what sounded good on my Marshall and then hooked it up to my Mac.  I recorded me playing for a few minutes and then listened to it over and over until I got the Logic settings the way I wanted them.  I bounced it just to make sure that it sounded okay on my MP3 player and car stereo (it does).  There’s no purpose in posting this song–I just figured I’d upload it for your listening pleasure.  Enjoy!

Piano Noodle

Filed under: Noodle — tim @ 11:31 pm

It’s Valentine’s Day and I had this little thing bouncing around in my head all day.  I was at the in-laws house for the evening and kept wanting to jump on their piano to work this out, but, you know, that’s just not social.  As soon as we got home and the wife went to bed, I ran to the piano and worked some of it out.  You can certainly hear some bum notes and I was a little late on my timings here and there, but you can hear where I’m going with it.  This is all improv and, well, I don’t know how to play piano.   I’m just messing around in the major scales for G, C, and D following a basic 12 bar blues pattern.

Like all of my noodles, we’ll see where this one goes!

New Noodle - Romance

Filed under: Noodle — tim @ 1:48 pm

Well, I still haven’t recorded anything for “Wah Me” but I have had this little diddy dancing around in my head for a few weeks.  I just laid down a noodle recording of it to try it out.  It still isn’t what I heard in my head but at least I can hear it.  I’m not sure if the percussion is exactly what will end up in the final version (whenever that’s finished) and the guitar sounds chinsy.  We’ll see where this one goes…

Oh yeah, the title “Romance” comes from the lyrics that popped into  my head today while I was formulating the song.  Vocals are not included in this  noodle mix.

Latest Noodle - Wah Me

Filed under: Noodle — tim @ 10:26 pm

For Christmas, my wife bought me a wah wah peddle. Since it was early in the month I convinced her to let me play it the first night. You know, to make sure that it sounded good and worked (and because I was dying to use it, but that wouldn’t go over as well). After screwing around with the settings a bit, I settled in to a sound that fit my playing. I kept playing around a few progressions and ended up recording it.

First I put down a guitar track just to get a basic feel. Then I found a looped drum track that fit the feel and adjusted the tempo to match what I was playing. I randomly chose portions of the song that would increase in intensity, and then I went back and recorded a bass line. I made it up as I went along and eventually found a groove. For the increased intensity bits I used the wah on the bass. After recording the drums and bass I went back and recorded the guitar part.  After recording I played with the mix a bit (try listening with headphones) to clean things up and make it more interesting.  Not that this is by any means a final product, of course, but it’s always nice to hear what you can do with the tracks in the mix.

I must say, man this one’s rough. The intense portion turned out to just be noise (it was fun while I was playing it, but the end result is still noise). Here and there the bass and guitar hit a groove, but overall, man this one’s rough.

Since recording this initial “jam” I’ve attempted to write and lay down a bass groove. As soon as I actually receive the wah wah I’ll try recording a new draft of this one. We’ll see where it goes!

Learning About Recording/Songwriting

Filed under: Advice — tim @ 9:37 am

I spent a long span of my life just playing other people’s songs on my old el-cheapo guitar. Often, poorly. Occassionally I’d write something and I’ve probably forgotten 99% of what I’ve written. With the advent of inexpensive digital recording, my world opened up. I started recording on my Mac in 2001 using a free version of ProTools. It was amazing–I was finally able to do multi-track recording! Since then I’ve purchased a new acoustic and a new electric guitar and found that my playing abilities improved. I moved to Logic Express and have learned more about the recording and songwriting process. How? Aside from listening to a lot of music recorded over the past 100+ years, I’ve also watched every episode of Classic Albums. Some of them twice. Others three times. This series takes you through the recording process of numerous classic albums, often with the original artists and producers giving their commentary. I highly recommend watching this series either on VH1-Classic or by renting them.
